Sherin Place, Rear of Dominic Street ( near Kilkenny Garda Station) Kilkenny City .PhotographerOfKilkenny|@gmail.com ,Mobile 0866604894 . London , Dublin, Paris and Berlin : Photographer Michael McGrath is the only professional photographer to have worked outside of Kilkenny at national and international level , in Dublin, London, Paris and Berlin . He is one of Ireland's leading exponents of a relaxed wedding and portrait style of contemporary photography. He specialises in model photography on location. He has also had considerable experience in advertising and commercial photography, and for some time back in the Eighties ran a company that serviced advertising agencies in London. His first full-time job in photography as far back as 1968 was as Photographer at the Irish Institute for Industrial Research and Standards at Glasnevin, Dublin, using mostly a Linhof Technica plate film 4 x5 camera . He began as a professional photographer in 1966 working for for himself in partnership with the late Donal Barry of Friary Street Studio , and part-time for Oliver of Kilkenny , that was after he left the Civil Service where he had been an Executive Officer in the Department of Local Government in the Custom House, Dublin, to re-enter the world of photography and journalism, ; he had been a Reporter on the Kilkenny Journal in 1964 before entering the Civil Service. He was originally introduced to photography by the late great Billy Hayes of Kilkenny . In 1969 he travelled to Germany as a lens tester for the famous Zeiss company, and from there to Paris where he worked as a street photographer through 1970, getting photographs published in Paris Match and Vogue- he laughs , describing himself as the original paparazzi ! Then it was London, on the fashion photography scene for five years alongside top London photographers such as Terence Donovan, Lord Lichfield, and even photographed the Queen herself and distinguished guests at the garden parties in Buckingham Palace, Mick Jagger and Marianne Faithful too, - and even worked with and palled around with David Bailey on occasion ! Back in Dublin in 1975 he worked alongside arguably the best Irish photographer of the era, Derek Speirs , and returned to Kilkenny when he landed a full time position as Photo-journalist with the Munster Express office in his native Kilkenny at Rose Inn Street, where the antique shop is now located. He is a Chartered Journalist, elected in 1980 to the Chartered Institute of Journalists, and also the Master Photographers Association . Preparing for the advent of Digital Photography, he studied computer science at Waterford Institute of Technology and Trinity College Dublin .( Michael wishes to remember Liam Davitt of Assumption Place for teaching him to be an artist in the darkroom, and to thank Eoin Murphy, Chief Staff Photographer of the Munster Express, Waterford, for teaching him the art of press photography; Billy Magill , Photographer of the Irish Examiner , Cork, for his inspiration, and Tom Brett , Press Photographer, Kilkenny People, for all the years of intense but friendly rivalry . He also wishes to remember his first editor, the late Tim Donovan on The Kilkenny Journal ; the late Nigel Brown of The Irish Times for phoning Kilkenny and offering him a job, the late G.A.A. sportswriter Paddy Downey of The Irish Times that he worked with , actually covering Irish Army Passing Out Parades in Stephens Barracks, Kilkenny ; his fabulous Sales Manager Davie McGrath of St. Fiacres Place, Kilkenny (RIP) , his former partner Gay Doran of Larchfield , as well as Gay's son-in-law Eddie Humphries, a good professional photographer in his own right , and especially the Bishops and priests of the Diocese of Ossory that have been so genuinely co-operative in helping through the years, Sean Courtney, editor -proprietor of the Kilkenny Standard as well as Dr. Tom Weymss , former press photographer ; Gerry and Jimmy Flynn, former Kilkenny photographers, James Green, Kilkenny ; Padraig Begley , formerly of Kennyswell and London and now living in Cork, Kilkenny's most artistic photographer of the Sixties ; Michael Kelly , Director of the Young Film Makers , Kilkenny , who was an excellent professional photographer in his time .And last but not least, Pearse Hanlon of Wolfe Tone Street , Kilkenny . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kVUZuVZWHkk Welcome, RatAgain, The Editor | |

Part-time women on Digi's making pin money , farmers part-timing as well , with all these Digi Kids around the profession is in danger of extinction as they're coming like paratroopers with their Digi's out of the skies - but none of the Digi Kids are making money, they're just ruining it on the real professionals .

On behalf of the Carlow/Kilkenny Samaritan Branch can we extend our thanks to the people of Kilkenny who so generously supported our flag day in May. The funds raised on Thursday and Friday far exceeded our expectations. To all those who volunteers to collect on our behalf, many thanks for your time and efforts on the day.
The funds will go towards the running of our branch, With thanks Gill |

report by former " Munster Express " Journalist , Michael McGrath, Photojournalist , The Studio, Dominic Street , Kilkenny City ( beside Kilkenny Garda Station ) .
A high speed Garda chase rocked the peaceful bedtime tranquility of the lovely Kilkenny suburb of Kennyswell at 11.30 p.m on Sunday night last . Shots were heard, fired from a pursuing Garda convoy on a dark car that broke the midnight slumber of residents in a chase that sped over 150 kilometres an hour . Local residents were quickly on the scene to watch the leading Garda car ram the fugitive vehicle into the ancient wall of the historic St. Canice's Well , and drag the five fugitives from the car . Suspects tried to climb over the low well wall to escape - they were grabbed and brutally hammered , mercilessly booted and beaten into the ground by uniformed Garda and detectives , and hustled into a Garda Maria van that had accompanied the chasing Garda convoy together with an ambulance that incredibly led the chase in a three-abreast file of ambulance , leading Garda car and the suspects car that was rammed against the Well wall . when it had to stop , blocked by the parked car of a local resident . Garda Officers spent two hours afterwards searching with torches for their ejected cartridge shells along the the roadway at the scene . But , according to the witnesses on the scene, the fugitives were totally unarmed . The local " KIlkenny People " newspaper today headlined an entirely different Garda chase that took place on the following night , Monday, that was press-released by the Garda as usual, but missed out entirely on the news of this much more important and dramatic incident , as they have no real news rteporters and depend on press releases always . And if I see another boast on a Kilkenny Photography website fromn an " award winning photographer " ( sic), I'll eat my hat !!!
These are awards given by the local camera club, the Kilkenny Photographic Society that I founded back in 1983 - and NOT Professional Photographer awards . True , some of them are given by the Irish AMATEUR Photography Federation, and would be pleasing to receive, but they are NOT awards in professional photography as their bearers make them out to be to gullible brides and grooms seeking a wedding photographer to book . As people making these claims are being dishonest, fraudulently trying to give the impression that they are something they are not, do not book them for your wedding as nobody knows where Deceit ends up !!! Be sure, don't be sorry , don't trust your wedding day to a Trickster with a Digi :-)
